Penn's Village Reads: A Selection from Florida by Lauren Groff

Florida Cover

“They’d been left alone on the island, the two little girls. Four and seven.” Margaret Mainland will read to us about two sisters, who are abandoned on an island with a dog and must fend for themselves in increasingly dire circumstances. At the same time, there are grim realities at hand, both in the sisters’ struggle to find enough food to survive and flashbacks to the volatile family life that led to their abandonment. Lauren Groff’s short stories have appeared or are forthcoming in a number of journals, including The Atlantic Monthly, Ploughshares, Glimmer Train, Hobart, and Five Points as well as in the anthologies Best American Short Stories 2007, Pushcart Prize XXXII, and Best New American Voices 2008.
