Penn's Village Reads: “The Waldstein Sonata” by Hartmut Lange and “The Model Millionaire” by Oscar

Can art conquer evil? In Hartmut Lange’s story, a world-renowned artist takes up this very fight. “The Waldstein Sonata,” read by Marjorie Muecke, sees Franz Liszt appear in the Führerbunker on 1 May 1945. That a piano performance could decide between life and death quickly becomes clear, as Liszt learns from Magda G. what she and Joseph G. – it is the Goebbelses who are implied here – have planned for their six children after the concert. Liszt decides to thwart the murder with Beethoven’s famous sonata.

In "The Model Millionaire,” a short story by Oscar Wilde, a young man who does not have much money himself is moved by an elderly beggar posing as a model for his artist friend. Although he can barely afford to do so, the young man gives the beggar the largest denomination coin that he has in his pocket, an act of kindness that has unexpected positive consequences for him.
