How Has the COVID-19 Pandemic Affected You?

It has been over a year since we have had limited in-person contact with one another in order to mitigate the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

During that time, some were infected and became ill.  Others lost relatives or friends or saw them hospitalized. Even the fortunate ones who remained physically healthy may have found themselves excessively worried or sad.

Some may feel that they have coped well, both medically and emotionally.  All have tales to tell and observations to make. For that reason, we invite you to join us for a discussion with breakout groups about the impact the pandemic has had on our lives, in particular the year-long partial isolation.

Potential questions we might discuss during this program include: How has the virus affected your existing relationships and how have you adapted? Have you developed new interests or hobbies, or perhaps pursued existing ones to new levels? Once the pandemic is under control, what is the first thing you are going to do?  In what areas has the pandemic permanently changed your outlook?

After the breakout groups re-convene, we will listen to each group’s summary and Dr. Pomerantz will then try to put our reported experiences and lessons into the context of what the psychological/psychiatric literature says about resiliency and coping.  That synthesis of what we have been through and learned may make it easier for all of us to go forward into what is still an uncertain and somewhat unprecedented time ahead.   Please note we will not be focusing directly on the medical impacts of the virus nor current vaccination efforts.

Mario Oropeza, Penn’s Village volunteer, will facilitate, and Dr. Jay Pomerantz will provide introductory comments. Dr. Pomerantz received an A.B. from Hamilton College and an M.D. from Yale University School of Medicine. He is a “Distinguished Life Fellow” of the American Psychiatric Association and winner of the “Outstanding Psychiatrist Award” of the Massachusetts Psychiatric Association in 2000.
