The title of this talk is taken from a paper by one of the giants of plant biology and genetics, Dr. Edgar Anderson. An alternative title might be "Celery, I thought I knew you". Anderson's point was this: in understanding the structure of a potato, "you have made a beginning at understanding for yourself the world around you. The world looks chaotic; deeper study shows us the order in it; with still deeper and more intensive study we are able to understand enough of the order underneath the apparent chaos so as to work with it rather than against it." An understanding of plant anatomy will fortify you against the chaos of this time! This program will introduce you to information about plants and how this information can help you to understand more about the world around you.
Dr.Scott Poethig is the John and Margaret Fassitt professor of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his research on the genetics of plant development, he teaches a course on the Biology of Food. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, and received the Lindback prize for teaching from the University of Pennsylvania.
