The Many Talents of Volunteer Marianne Waller

Marianne is a personal historian who helps people tell the stories of their lives and regularly contributes this expertise to Penn’s Village.  When she hosts the triennial program,Show and Tell for Grownups, we share the memories behind objects that are special to us and learn how interesting our neighbors are.

May is personal history month and on the 29th, Marianne will give us practical guidance for developing what is often called an ethical will or spiritual legacy.

Marianne is one of the first Health Pals, volunteers who support Penn’s Village members as they navigate the health care system. She enjoys “teaming up” with a member to listen, learn and clarify, “making sure to make the most of our time with the doctor”.

Introducing Hannah Gomez, Our Communications Intern

Hannah is a junior at Temple University, where she is studying Advertising- Account Management at Lew Klein College of Media and Communication and minoring in General Business Studies at the Fox School of Business. She is also a Big Sister in the Independence Region for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, and has always loved volunteering and helping others. Hannah dreams of attending law school and would like to either work in Intellectual Property Law or Family Law. She is an extreme dog lover, and really enjoys cooking and trying new foods.

Hannah loves working with Penn’s Village and learning about the interesting backgrounds of both volunteers and Villagers.
She has already contributed so much. Check out our new blog from the welcome page of www.pennsvillage.org.

We are Listening

Penn’s Village members and volunteers pose thoughtful questions and give us great suggestions. We thought we would share them with you on an ongoing basis.

A caregiver support group would be helpful. We do have a caregiver support group that meets monthly in the Penn’s Village office. The group, facilitated by two retired social workers, has been meeting for several years and the participants find it helpful and enjoyable.

It is sometimes difficult to hear speakers at Penn’s Village programs. The Program Committee views this as an important issue and is currently exploring the audio equipment at each venue and researching options for purchasing an appropriate, portable sound system.

Penn’s Village should have more opportunities for members and volunteers to socialize.  The Program Committee agrees! Our pop up happy hour on May 14 was quite the success and we want to do more. If you would be interested in helping with this, let us know.

Keep your comments coming and contact us if you would like to participate in putting ideas into action: Email info@pennsvillage.org or call 215-925-7333.

The Program Committee Spent the Winter Planning for Spring

May is personal history month. We will celebrate with a two-part program. On the 22nd we will play Hello, a conversation game, to begin a meaningful conversation about what matters most. The second event is a workshop to give you practical guidance as you develop what is often called an ethical will or spiritual legacy. Both events will be held at 2:00 PM.

Also in May, the 23rd is tech day: at 2PM, Mario Oropeza, co chair of the Program Committee, will explain how voice activated devices can save time and effort.  At 3:30, Yoav Zohar will give Apple device users (IMAC, iPad, iPhone) tips for getting the most out of our investments.

On June 5th, Kyle Tevlin, believing that death is a normal part of life and that funerals should celebrate life, will share her vision for injecting happiness and laughter into nontraditional funerals. Save the 9th for Penn’s Village ally Excel Physical Therapy to talk to us about bone health: “The more you do, the better you feel “. On June 13 we go to current events and talk about Russia. On the 18th, we will learn about the life of bees and then visit an apiary on the 20th. Trust us, this is fascinating. June programming ends on the 29th when we will learn about amazing progress in treating AIDS.  Details are available from the welcome page of the Penn’s Village website: www.pennsvillage.org.
