Dante Murphy will read “Big Two-Hearted River,” one of the many short stories written by Ernest Hemingway that feature his autobiographical protagonist, Nick Adams. It’s an example of narrative fiction in which the descriptions of objects reveal the mindset of the narrator, rather than the actions he takes or the words he speaks. In fact, there are only three lines of dialogue and one character in the whole story, but the richness and simplicity of the language are as poetic as the sparse Michigan landscape. The story was written shortly after WWI, where Hemingway served with the Red Cross as an ambulance driver on the Italian Front.
