Penn's Village Reads: “Jeeves and the Hard-boiled Egg” by P.G. Wodehouse

Brian Wengenroth will read the short story “Jeeves and the Hard-boiled Egg,” by P.G. Wodehouse, which was first published in the Saturday Evening Post in the United States in March, 1917.

In this story, set in New York, a friend of Bertie, "Bicky" Bickersteth, gets into financial trouble and asks Jeeves to help. Jeeves proposes a scheme to help Bicky that involves Bicky's uncle, the miserly Duke of Chiswick, and a convention of men from Birdsburg, Missouri. The story is part of a collection entitled My Man Jeeves, featuring the amiable, wealthy and idle young London gentleman Bertie Wooster, who is regularly rescued from the consequences of his idiocy by the benign interference of his highly competent valet, Jeeves.

Critics have said that Wodehouse “had a gift for highly original aptness of phrase,” and “the humour comes from Wodehouse's ability to accentuate resemblances which at first glance seem highly incongruous.” Bertie Wooster and Jeeves have been described as "one of the great comic double-acts of all time.”
