Penn's Village Reads: “The Rabbit Outbreak” by Susan Orlean

“Rabbits are the most discriminated against of all the domestic animals: ridiculed for their lustiness; viewed as expendable; lumped in with oddball animals like the chinchillas or prairie dogs; always subject to the question, are they pets or meat?”
So writes Susan Orlean in The New Yorker magazine, as part of her story on the outbreak of RHDV2, a variant on rabbit hemorrhagic disease that’s poised to become endemic in the U.S. Margherita Abe will read this article from the July 6 & 13, 2020 issue to help us learn more about this lethal animal virus that has hit our shores.

Susan Orlean is a journalist and bestselling author of The Orchid Thief and The Library Book. She has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1992.
