Islam 101
Our speakers will give us a brief introduction to foundational beliefs of Muslims, share information on Islam, and talk about the agency of women in Islam.
They will compare culture versus religion, offering a nuanced view in historical perspective, and share voices, issues and perspectives in the 21st century of American Muslim women.
Ahmet Selim Tekelioglu is the Outreach and Education Director at the Philadelphia Chapter of Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR).
He holds a PhD in Political Science from Boston University. His academic research focuses on religion in America, transnationalism, and American Muslim identity. Tekelioglu teaches courses on American Muslim History and Islam in Philadelphia at Temple University's OLLI program and at Reconstructionist Rabbinical College.
Nevan Hamid is a member of CAIR-Philadelphia Advisory Board.
She was born and raised in Cairo, Egypt. She graduated from Cairo Medical College, Cairo University and moved to the US to join her husband and raise her two children in Pennsylvania. Hamid became a member of the outreach committee at Villanova Islamic Foundation and started a women’s group for Islamic Studies in 2003, which recently moved to the Islamic Society of Greater Valley Forge.
In 2010, she joined an interfaith group, attending Bible study, where she learned about the Old and New testaments and found similarities and differences with Islamic belief. Understanding other religions helps her to work with others to bridge differences.
